Victorian Cameo Brooch Depicting "Day"

Victorian Cameo Brooch Depicting "Day"

Circa 1900. This exceptional 18KT gold Victorian brooch features a finely carved shell cameo depicting "Day," one of the celebrated allegorical figures designed by renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844). Revered throughout the nineteenth century, Thorvaldsen's neoclassical compositions inspired generations of gem engravers and cameo artists, who translated his graceful figures into wearable works of art.

The cameo portrays the winged figure of Day in flowing classical drapery, accompanied by a cherubic child and carrying bouquets of flowers, symbolizing light, renewal, and the beginning of life's daily cycle.

Thorvaldsen-inspired cameos enjoyed enormous popularity during the nineteenth century, particularly among collectors who admired classical art and mythology. Today, examples depicting his allegorical figures remain especially desirable, combining fine craftsmanship with a direct connection to one of Europe's most influential neoclassical artists.
